Meet people through music
There are different bands with this name: A Free Jazz ensemble (1), a Czechish Metal band (2) and a Swedish hard rock band (3). 1. A jazz trio composed of Ken Vandermark, Håvard Wiik, and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten. The group took inspiration for their name from the brilliant album "Free Fall", by the Jimmy Giuffre Trio but, while the instrumentation has obvious parallels (clarinet, piano, bass) and other musical associations that can be made between the two groups (combination of pulse and open time, distribution of melodic responsibility through fragmentation, etc.), Free Fall was not put together as a Jimmy Giuffre "tribute band": listening to the improvisational and compositional methods used on ther recordings, "Furnace" (2003), "Amsterdam Funk" (2005), and "The Point in a Line" (2007), the different approach in exploration of tonal space and musical contrasts pops out clearly. This trio is unlike any of the other projects that Ken Vandermark's been involved in. There's none of the wild energy found in Vandermark 5 and his work with The Thing. The trio was formed to carry on the style of the 1960s drumless trio of Jimmy Giuffre. The influence is obvious, though the music they play is not a straight tribute to Giuffre. Vandermark plays clarinet on all tracks. The music is melodic and reflective, and is a tribute to Vandermarks flexibility. He is well accompanied by an excellent Swedish pairing.
