About Phil Gould
Perhaps best known for his founding membership in the popular band Level 42 throughout the '80s, Phil Gould (28 February 1957) is also a respected session drummer and songwriter. His music career began with appearances on recordings by the likes of M and Roxy Music. He went on to form Level 42 with fellow Isle of Wight musicians - his guitarist brother, Boon Gould, and bass player Mark King - and Mike Lindup, a keyboardist/vocalist who had been a classmate of Phil at London's Royal Academy Of Music. It was this foursome who went on to achieve success with Level 42, both at home in the UK and internationally. Upon leaving the band in 1987 due to creative differences, Phil continued to work as a professional drummer and returned to Level 42 briefly in 1994, contributing both new songs and his drums to their studio release, "Forever Now." Opting not to remain with the band for the promotional tour, he parted ways with Level 42 once and for all and continued to work as a session musician and as a mentor for new artists. In 2008, Phil reunited with his former bandmate Mike Lindup and longtime Level 42 collaborator Wally Badarou to record the album Terraforming which was released in early 2009 under the name Gould, Brown And Black. Nuances of electronica fuse with Phil's signature sound throughout the album, which was well-received by fans. In October 2009, a second album was released: "Watertight." Once again, Phil's favourite collaborators - including Boon, Mike Lindup, Wally Badarou, Berenice Scott(daughter of Robin Scott), Miles Bould, Yolanda Charles, Fabio Balestrieri, and others - contributed to the creation of the album. Phil continues to play the occasional live gig in the UK with his musician friends.
