About Secret Mountains
"You've got that neo-gothic Portishead vibe going on, laced with clear and delicate vocals, but then again, you're so psychedelic. You've been reviewed by the NY Times but still remain totally obscure. You rock really hard but then you shoegaze away. You're great, that's all." Secret Mountains (formerly The Owls Go) are a Baltimore, MD-based band started by Jeffrey Lewis Silverstein (guitar) in 2008 along with Kelly Laughlin (vocals). Later, Chris Muccioli (drums/percussion) was added to the band, followed by the addition of Cory Lawrence (guitar) and Jake Winstanley (keyboards/messy sounds). In 2010, the lineup was solidified with the addition of bassist Alex Jones They play shows in the Baltimore area and along the east coast, and in August 2009 had their first tour, along with Lands & Peoples and European Swans, which hit cities from the east coast to the midwest, USA. This past summer they completed an extensive two week tour through the heart of the south, including stops in Mississippi and New Orleans curving north from Florida up to Brooklyn, NY. Their first EP, Kaddish was released on Fall Records in august of 2009. The band's second EP, Rejoice was released on Friends Records in October of 2010. More information can be found at http://www.myspace.com/secretmountains "The bulk of the last decade brought Baltimore's hyper-color acts--the dance epics of Dan Deacon and the guitar spirals of Ecstatic Sunshine and Ponytail, or even the expatriate pop exuberance of Animal Collective--to the central streams of indie rock. Maybe it's time to pull the shades: Maryland sextet Secret Mountains is a slow, subdued wonder, shaped by serpentine guitar lines that sigh and moan and busy drumming that sidles into the beat and shuffles around it. The surface is supplied by Kelly Laughlin, a singer whose muted alto seems wounded but resilient, like an autumn sun breaking through early morning clouds. This band is bound for bigger rooms."
