Last.FM is essential for music discovery for me.

Last.fm is awesome. I don't use it as a social network thought, just to listen to music. Since I started using it I have discovered A LOT of new music. It digs deep. Finds music you won't find anywhere else. Another cool thing is if you look way on the bottom there are a lot of free songs offered that you can download based off stations/bands you have listened to. And I like the scrobbling. That way if I forget the name of a new song or something that I listened to, I can just look at my last.fm account to see what it was.

and yeah, if anything is a wannabe-facebook site, it's tastebuds, not last.fm.

last.fm = silent and progressive counter friend with benefits.
tastebuds = band stickers on the front door and a chatty livingroom.
tastebuds is about yes/no.
last.fm is digging deeper.
tastebuds is about you and woeva blablas about woeva.
last.fm is about your listening habits, on song basis and no blabla, woeva.
tastebuds is trying hard to become trendy, and smells more like sweat.
last.fm is not for the extraverted, it's more like a silent disco.
the choice is your's, i use 'em both.

I know the socialising aspect is important there, but I found this site a more comfortable music social network because it seems to be much better ordered and user friendly. At last.fm the options are so numerous it gets overwhelming. Here it just seems more "ordered" and structured.

There's one girl I wanted to send a message, but without Last.fm account I guess I better forget about that. It's be odd to ask someone with a Last.fm account to send it on behalf of me ("there's this person who really would like to talk to you about your music, he's not on this site however but..."). Well, it may not be that weird at all, I mean: it's nothing insulting or so, it's just saying you'd like to get in touch. Without having a tool scanning the tracks you play on your computer ... Maybe not so odd at all.

The forum part seems very nice too but I peeked a moment and the number of members on the forums about the bands I love most is limited and none lives nearby, so for socialising or carpooling to a concert it would not exactly help. (which doesn't mean a nice discussion about your favourite band cannot be fun, regardless of location)

I doubt there is a cabal looking at people's last.fm scrobbles to see if someone has listened to "Cheeky Girls - Touch My Bum", and to vilify them for it.

Hmm.. You should refer to planetdamage's answer for alternatives to Last.fm. See if they work out for you. :)

Also, please note here that you CAN infact "scrobble" directly from YouTube, via extensions.
And, I'd say it again that it's not mandatory to use the PC application; but without it, it ain't no fun.
