HMV - end of an era?
I was sad to hear the recent news about HMV going into administration. They are the last remaining high street CD / DVD retailer and, although at the moment they are keeping their high street stores open, I fear that it's only a matter of time before they end up closing down for good.
HMV have been around all my life (in fact they opened their first store in 1921!) and I am old enough to remember the days when there were several 'record shops' around....there were lots of smaller, independent shops which came and went over the years but every town centre had an HMV.
It just goes to show how the way people purchase music has changed dramatically in recent years....many people made the transition to downloading music (either legally or otherwise!). Also, a lot of people who, like myself, still prefer CDs, are now buying them online from Amazon or play.com because it's usually cheaper. Supermarkets too are now selling CDs and DVDs much cheaper than HMV ever could.
I must admit that I sometimes buy CDs online from wherever is the cheapest, but I do still shop at HMV too, and I will be sad to see them go. Apart from anything else, I have always found HMV staff very helpful and friendly....even though I am now twice the age of the staff in my local store, they are always polite and respectful, and if I have ever had any queries about anything, they have been happy to help. That is something that you don't get online.
RIP HMV....you will be missed! :-(
