First time l watched these guys on the box was the 1976 FA Cup Final which was a famous victory for 2nd Division club Southampton, their finest hour. lt's one of the only times where a lower tier team beat a First Division team.
Fast forward to 2006, some thirty years later, and l was recounting this story of my inauspicious start as a MUFC supporter to my brother's ex father- in-law.
His face lit up with a story of an episode where he was stationed at Fulham Barracks in London, and he'd been travelling on the tube between Wembley Stadium and his barracks , surrounded by these deliriously joyful Southampton supporters. When they got off the train, one of them forgot to take their Union Jack flag emblazoned with handwritten names of his heroes of the day.
Trev brought the flag back to OZ and stored it in an old trunk for all those years, that is until his jawdropping experience of hearing my story.
He disappeared into his garage and returned with this amazing souvenir which he graciously gave to me.

p.s. the flag now resides in a trunk in my garage, a reminder of a very late night long ago.
