There's no proof that punk music lyrics + marching = social change. It gives non-mainstream ideas exposure. That's all.

Straight edge is a great example of punk lyrics making a difference. :-D!

Let me clarify: I'm not saying music can't make a difference. I'm not even saying that lyrics can't make a difference. I'm simply saying:

- That difference is small. It's a spark, not a fire, in the imagination that leads to change.

- Why is it important that a musician's opinion be louder than that of other members of society, especially those who are qualified to talk about "environmental flaws and socioeconomic ramifications"? Don't look to musicians for "sound advice" or for life guidance. For every Minor Threat, there are a hundred Guns 'n' Roses.

- Actions speak louder than words. I know more people who listen to RATM than do actually rage against the machine.

- Happy lyrics don't necessarily equal a happier person or a "better" society.

Because that's what society means; other people. It's like asking "why should 'animal rights' be only about the rights of animals?"

An individual can affect society through his/her individual change (e.g. inspire others to be vegetarian simply by being vegetarian), but the emphasis is still on doing something that requires effort and sacrifice rather than listening to music and smiling.

Im sure there probably have been gigs where people did change their views about issues. But they were still creating social change by getting their fans together and promoting their marches and big gigs to their fans,and their fans probably did go out and leaflet the general public to encourage them along to marches. And from seing the numbers prepared to take to the streets then it might have made one or two idiots think twice about starting on people for no reason.

It influenced non-racists.

i.e. It preached to the converted.

Maybe I've misunderstood the discussion, but:

I doubt standalone lyrics by themselves changed anything, but they might have inspired someone into a political action. Awareness breeds action, and if Rage Against The Machine sings about Tibet it might bring awareness about the situation to someone who didn't know about it before. That someone could potentially become politically active and even help change the situation.

So although I don't think music has a direct effect on social issues, it is one of many tools that could be used for bringing awareness to a cause or a social problem.

Why should a revolutionary be sad?

And why should "social change" mean only helping other people? I took part in hundreds of demostrations, stopped trains, entered in military zones, risked of being arrested and was hit by truncheons, and I wasn't doing this ONLY to help other people, but ALSO to change my own life for better. I'm afraid if people don't realize that social changes are needed for themselves in the first place, nothing is ever going to change.

Well it influenced enough people to go march and see bands then who probably would not have went just for speechs

P.S. I request one example -- just one -- of a change caused by punk lyrics.

Oh.

It seems racism was ended by rock stars in 1978...
